his is probably the most difficult image I have ever taken. We started driving around 3 am in the night to reach Abraham Lake before sunrise. But there was a huge snowfall just the day before. So I had very little hope of seeing the ice bubble. Just after reaching the place we saw the whole lake was covered with snow. Still I had a very little hope of getting few ice bubbles somewhere. The car dashboard was showing the outside temperature was around -40°C. And with a chilly wind it was more than that. I had no idea how it feels like in that extreme temperature. Still I went out scouting some places. I saw few dark patches far in the lake, I thought may be the snow is not covering those places and may be there are few ice bubbles. Halfway through I realized that I forgot my balaclava inside the car and my face is getting cracks like the Death Valley (no kidding). Once I thought lets forget about Ice bubble, sunrise and everything, lets run back to our SUV, turn on the heater and be alive first. But I am always really stubborn with anything. I decided no matter what I will take one image at least. Luckily I found few patches of Ice bubbles here and there, but then I realized my tripod ballhead (I can say all the balls were frozen that morning :P) and locks are completely frozen. I was like "Ohhh crap", because I generally do focus stacking, focal length blending and other stuffs. I have done them handheld before but at -40°C? Nooo way. The problem was the wind which was so strong and it was impossible to stand there with that wind passing by. Thankfully I had my Mountainsmith day lumbar pack on my back and I tried to put my camera on it and take few shots. I still remember I removed my winter gloves just to press the shutter and immediately my skin got glued to the camera and frozen. Somehow I managed to do the focus stacking and took few more shots before rushing back to the car. What a memorable morning we had. Can't wait to go back to the Rockies again in Winter.
