Location
Patagonia (Fitz Roy, Argentina)Time
Somewhere between 9 and 10am.Lighting
This photo was taken well after the ideal sunrise time; however, the cloud cover provided enough diffusion to preserve the directional light that is still available in the late morning.Equipment
This was from a handheld shot with a Fuji X-T2 and a 100-400mm lens AFTER I finished my main photo session which started with a pre-dawn hike.Inspiration
I always look for mountain peaks or elements that are relatively vertical...they don't necessarily need to be a lone standout peak. Any vertical element or cluster will usually make a captivating composition because most of the earth is dominated by horizontal elements (due to gravity, erosion, etc.) This capture does not even show the main feature of this area (the Fitz Roy peak), so you can see that a vertical element does not necessarily need to be famous to be captivating.Editing
Post processing was mostly manual vignetting and shading, with some relatively minor work in playing with contrast and clarity. The sky was darkened enough to suggest that the capture was done earlier in the morning. In my camera bag
Fuji X-T2 and Sony A7Rx, 16-35mm zoom and a 100-400mm zoom.Feedback
Anytime you see atmospheric layers with subdued, directional light, you have to jump on the opportunity to see what can come out in post-processing. Don't discount a scene if your eyes are not impressed...your sensor is picking up more, and all that data is waiting to come out in post-processing.
