I love the snow on their faces. Have seen this before after they have been rooting around for food in the snow.

Location
This photo was taken near Bathurst NB. I walk these trails several times a week in the winter. There are always deer on the trails as they winter or 'yard' there. I had just started down this trail when I saw the deer off in the distance. They were quite far away and I thought they were headed in the opposite direction. I stopped to watch them. Then I realized they were coming towards me. I put my camera up to my eye and watched them advance through the lens. I didn't move and they just kept coming. The lead deer would take a few steps forward, stop, and the other two would close in. He sometimes stamped his front foot, then advanced a bit further. When I snapped this picture they were very close. They were so close that I put the camera down to step off the trail so they could pass. When I did that, they turned tail and ran off in the opposite direction.Time
The photo was taken around 10:00 am on a cloudy day. It was snowing lightly.Lighting
The light was subdued due to the snowfall. It was excellent as there were no shadows on the deer.Equipment
When walking these trails, I take my Nikon 750d. I attach a Nikon 80-400mm lens. This is as much lens as I can carry. I find it very good for wildlife.Inspiration
There is not a lot of color or variety on the North Shore of New Brunswick in January. Everything is covered in snow or frozen solid. The deer are easily accessible and they warm my heart.Editing
This photo was taken in RAW, so I did some adjustments to tone, light and sharpness in Light Room.In my camera bag

I really like taking photos on cloudy days. In the winter time, I find mid morning has the best light, but that could just be my opinion as I'm rarely out in the woods at sunrise or sunset in January. With wind chill of -30 degrees Celsius, it would be risky if not foolhardy.
