Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in spring at lake Hintersee in the wonderful Alps of Bavaria.

Time

It was a early cold morning in spring. I visited this spot a few times during my stay in the Berchtesgaden Alps but this morning was just perfect. I just love that time of the day when everyone else is still in bed, no sounds of traffic, no people around. Just me watching this majestic scenery in the best light of the day.

Lighting

I was searching for a perfect angle to get a great reflection of mountain Hochkalter on the surface of the water. The little rock island with the coniferous trees was perfect for the foreground. Finally I was waiting for the first light on top of the mountain to give it color and contrasts.

Equipment

It was shot on my Nikon D5300 with the Tokina 11-16 F2,8 on a tripod.

Inspiration

This place is well known for landscape shots today. Before i came here, i saw a few photos of the lake, mostly taken from the same angle. I am always inspired to shoot well known places a bit different than the most photographers did before.

Editing

I try to keep my landscape photos as natural as it looked to me when i shot it. All of my photos are shot in RAW and edited in Adobe Lightroom. I gave the photo the white balance it needed and made it warm as it was sunrise. I took out the lights and made the dark parts a bit brighter. A bit vibrance and sharpening were the final steps.

In my camera bag

I always have a wide angle, a 35 mm lens and a 50 mm lens in my bag. Sometimes i carry my Sigma 150-600 mm in a separate bag.

Feedback

The most important and hardest part is to get up before everyone else does. You should know the places you want to shoot. Doing a bit location scouting before you shoot the scenery in the perfect light is the best way to make sure you get the best out of it. My favourite lens for landscapes is a wide angle.
