Behind The Lens

Location

I believe this image was taken at June Lake in California. I was camping with the College of Idaho outdoor program and we arrive the night before having no clue that there was a lake just over the hill.

Time

I remember pretty vividly how cold it was the night before I took this image. It was getting just below 20F that night so lets just say getting up early that morning wasn't much of a struggle. What was a little scary was I wasn't sure where the sun was going to come out from and for a while it seemed like the smoke and the mountain behind me was going to make the picture a real dud.

Lighting

For me all I wanted to do was document what I was seeing at that moment. I didn't really have time to dial everything in perfectly as the light was changing fast but what was created with the smoke and early morning light that day was something truly special.

Equipment

I shot this image hand holding my 7D Mark II with the Sigma 18-35mm F1.8.

Inspiration

Inspiration for me comes from many avenues but for this image is was simply my love for nature and my ability to be in that place at that exact time. Sometime all the inspiration you need come from the subject right in front of you.

Editing

I use nearly exclusively light room to post process my images and I try to keep the editing down to a minimum. However for this image I have to get a little creating because the smoke and atmosphere really created a dull raw file out of camera. For this image specifically I used a pretty good amount if dehaze and clarity to get it back to what I was seeing through my view finder.

In my camera bag

I feel like I have way to much gear with me at a time but I have a Lowepro Whistler bag and I always have my Canon 7D Mark II with the Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 attached. Next to that I keep my Canon 70-200mm F2.8 USM L which is a great lens but its definitely getting old. I also have a Canon 24-105mm F4 IS L for video and then finally I carry either my Nikon FM with a 50mm F1.8 or my Mamiya C3 with an 80mm F2.8 blue dot lens load with Portra 160 or Acros 100. The last and most important thing is my tripod which is a Manfrotto #055 Pro 3 and a FLM ball head.

Feedback

It's as easy as being in the right place really early in the morning. To be honest this image was a lot of luck, normally days before I take a shot like this I plan out exactly where the light will be, if there will be clouds, whats the fall color is like, will there be a milky way that night, etc. Basically if you want to take great landscape images you will never get anything good unless you plan.
