Location
The photo was taken from the passenger seat of my roommates Subaru WRX. He was in the drivers seat and I was in the opposite seat in the back. It was taken in Golden Colorado.Time
It was taken in the early evening when the sun just starts to go down. I remember that we were going to a car meet that evening and that he wanted to leave. It was a little dark but I just decided to open up the aperture and shoot.Lighting
When I take pictures I really like to document the moment and to just take the picture of the scene. I think posing a picture when things are already unraveling kills the moment and therefore I fail at documenting what is going on. I saw this great light outlining his face and the way the soft diffused light was coming in really prompted a picture.Equipment
I used a Canon 7d, Canon 50mm f/1.8 II, hand held.Inspiration
I don't usually take portrait shots, for the most part I just take picture of thing I like when the light is good. When I took the picture the light was perfect and I was wanting to just document what was going on. This picture was the only keeper out of 50 pictures and it was not even posed, he is actually waiting for my brother and looking at his phone. But through the lens it looks much more stoic and profound. When I took this picture it was purely for the light but because of the composition and action I believe it is much more.Editing
I use Lightroom 5 and so there is no actual changes to the picture its self. Although it was converted to a B&W file and I added contrast, and brought up the shadows so the face was more prominent. Other than minor adjustment to exposer and the histogram there is no major post processing. In my camera bag
So I usually pack everything when I got to places that I intend to document or take pictures. That includes a Canon 7d, Canon 70-200mm f/2.8 USM, 300mm f/4 USM, 50mm f/1.8 II, and a broken 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS that's stuck at 28mm, external flash, and wireless triggers. I also have my tripod and my monopod to support the glass. That day though, I just had my 7d with the 50mm and my tripod because I was packing light.Feedback
Look for the light. This picture could have been a very boring picture of a guy looking at his phone but it wasn't. When the sun starts to fall and the light becomes diffused, look for the light that creates a tone that fits the situation. Another important part is the bokeh balls formed from the droplets on the window, It is important to look for and understand what parts of a scene can impact the photo. To get something similar, look for good dramatic light and just take pictures. There is no way to get a good picture if it was never taken, when you have the feeling of good light take the picture and it will be something extraordinary.
