Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo on our summer cottage in Central Finland on Midsummer Eve, which is when us Finns get together with friends and family and traditionally light a bonfire.

Time

We lit up our bonfire late in the evening, somewhere around 11 PM - but as you can see from the photo, it's still quite bright. Even though we only get the actual Midnight Sun in Northern Finland, even here it doesn't get dark at night during Summer.

Lighting

I shot this with the smallest aperture in order to be able to use a slightly slower shutter to make the fire look smooth - but not too smooth as when using an ND filter and even slower shutter. As it wasn't dark, the landscape is still clearly visible and not just the fire.

Equipment

I used Canon 5D Mark IV together with Irix Blackstone 15 mm f/2.4 wide angle lens on top of my timelapse rig (80 cm slider on two tripods).

Inspiration

I was shooting a Midsummer video and wanted to include a timelapse of the bonfire in there. This is one of the early frames when the bonfire was just lit and flames were really wild.

Editing

Photo was optimized in Lightroom, bringing out the details also from darker areas.

In my camera bag

When out somewhere where I don't need to hike any long distances, I usually travel with two Canon bodies (5DM4 + 6D), a Canon 24-105f/4L lens plus two Sigma wide-angles, as I do mostly landscape photography and often shoot at night. For timelapses I have Syrp Genie, Genie Mini and Magic Carpet 80 cm slider plus two Benro tripods and one Sirui.
