Behind The Lens

Location

Shot in a studio in Athens, Greece

Time

Since in was shot in a studio with artificial light, time is of no importance.

Lighting

No special advice on the lighting. All my advice is on the emotion of the moment. Not on the technical staff of the shot

Equipment

Shot with a Nikon D750 handheld, with a Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 VRII I used a studio flash with a Walimex Pro grided softbox 80x120

Inspiration

In the studio there was a rocking chair and my mind traveled back into time, when such chairs were frequently used. The rocking chair make a mother relax because of the harmony it moves. She controls the rhythm. I saw in my mind an image of a mother holding her belly and just looking out of the window, on a sunny day, relaxed and so beautiful and happy. Since we were in a studio, I just changed the scene and I let her talk to her baby for almost 15 minutes. And there it was...

Editing

The post processing is minimal. It was all done in Lightroom. Some dodge and burn and a black & white conversion process.

In my camera bag

I usually have two camera bodies, a Nikon D750 and a D610, my Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 VRII, a Sigma 50mm f/1.4 Art, a Sigma 35mm f/1.4 Art, a Tokina 100mm f/2.8 Macro and a Nikon 16-35mm f/4 VR I also have two speedflashes, Yongnuo YN-568-EX, a set of Yongnuo triggers YN-622N-TX iTTL I always carry my Seconic lightmeter L-308S-U

Feedback

Well, I have no useful advice about the lighting but only in the emotion of the moment. Speak to her like you are her best friend and keep telling her in what way to touch her belly. She should forget the camera. In the room there are a mother to be and a unborn baby kicking her belly. Try to capture the emotion. Wait for it! don't just shoot making the flashes, you are distracting her. Make her talk to her unborn baby. She is holding her unborn baby, not her belly. Ask her what will be the first thing she will tell her baby when she holds it for the first time. What will be the first fairy tail she will tell to her baby. Try to think as a parent, not just as a photographer. Wait for the moment and just grasp the moment as soon as you see it. Our whole photo session was 60 clicks in 4 different outfits. But it took us 4 hours for those clicks.
