Behind The Lens

Location

The shoot was taken in Elefsina area in Athens, Greece.

Time

I woke up at 3 in the morning as I had to travel for one and a half hour from my house to the location and I wanted to be ready for my first shots just before sunrise. This shot is at 6 in the morning

Lighting

Well this is a 12 minutes long exposure shot so I had a constantly changing light both in quality and quantity

Equipment

I used a Nikon D610 on a Manfrotto 190xprob tripod with a 3-way pan-tilt head. I also used the Lee Big Stopper filter

Inspiration

I new that the sun at this time of the year will rise just behind the wreck. I wanted to capture the wreck in that soft colorful light

Editing

Well, the post processing is minimal. Hot Spots removal, sensor spots and a bit of contrast and clarity.

In my camera bag

When I am travelling for landscape photography I always carry to Nikon bodies, D610 and D750. I carry a 16-35mm f/4 lens, a 70-200mm f/2.8, my all around 24-120mm f/4 and a 35mm f/1.4. I always have my Lee Graduated filters plus the Big Stopper in my bag plus and a Circular Polarizer and an ND8 Hoya filters.

Feedback

To capture a sunrise with such a long exposure shot you must scout the location prior to the shooting day. A 12 minute long exposure shot at sunrise means that you only have one shot. After that the sun will be much higher and you will lose the effect. So get up early, give yourself time to familiarize with the location at night and setup your gear without having the pressure of time.
