Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in St. Joseph, Michigan at the St. Joseph North Pier Lighthouse located on the shore of Lake Michigan.

Time

This photo was taken in the morning after a long cold snowy drive down to St. Joseph. The drive was about 80 miles one way. At times the snow was blowing so hard you couldn't see the road and the thought to go back home where it was warm was very strong and yet forging on finally ending up in St. Joseph for a series of photos including this one.

Lighting

The lighting was just natural light in spite of the blowing snow which made it very difficult to stand outside the vehicle for any length of time.

Equipment

Using my Canon EOS 7D with the 28-135mm lens I would take a shot or two and walk back to the vehicle, jump in and warm up, then venture back out again to get another shot or two.

Inspiration

I actually wanted to drive to St. Joseph which was about an 80 mile drive to take photos of the lighthouse in the middle of the winter in Michigan. I found myself questioning that decision more than once on the drive to St. Joe and also after getting there and freezing in between taking my shots.

Editing

Post processing for this photo was changing it to black and white along with minor tweaks to contrast, etc.

In my camera bag

My bag includes the Canon 7D and Canon 20D, extra battery for both cameras, lens cleaner and cloth, at least on point and shoot camera with batteries and memory card for that camera. I usually have my tripod in the trunk even though I have rarely used a tripod. I have a few add on lenses such as cross cut and polarized lens. I usually have more than I need just like packing for vacation.

Feedback

Everyone says if you don't like the weather in Michigan just wait five minutes and it will change. This can be true anyplace so just try to be somewhat prepared for some change and of course dress for comfort and the terrain you will be on. Landscapes are tricky due to natural light so be aware of where your light is coming from. Usually sunrises and sunsets make for great shots with most landscape shots. Preparation and patience are helpful to any photographer. Good luck to all.
