Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken at Cannon Beach, Oregon.

Time

Mid-morning. As an enthusiastic novice freelance writer, photographing seniors enjoying the beach was my project for the day. I hoped to find and photograph subjects to accompany an article about the Oregon coast I was writing and planning to submit to a Canadian senior magazine. But on this May morning a cold, grey fog had rolled in with the tide, reducing the beach and distant landscape to colourless, shapeless shadows. With the exception of a few gulls huddled near the shoreline, the beach was deserted. Not my lucky day, I thought, but then, as if scripted for a movie scene, two riders appeared out of the fog. They walked their horses, creating an interesting trail of hoof prints and reflections in the water. At last, I had a subject and a formulated composition -- and, when the hatted, bearded riders graciously halted their horses to speak to me, seniors.

Lighting

It was low light, but light enough for the riders to create a silhouette.

Equipment

Camera: Canon Powershot S2 IS. Hand held, as I did not have a tripod and there was nowhere to rest the camera on the beach.

Inspiration

Riders on a deserted beach riding through the fog made for an interesting and challenging subject.

Editing

No post processing.

In my camera bag

Camera, lens cleaner, extra battery and memory card. Sometimes a tripod.

Feedback

Fog or unusual light often make for interesting pictures. For this one, I wanted to capture the foggy background, the hoof prints in the sand leading to the subject, and position the riders in the bottom half of the picture, far enough away to create a silhouette, but near enough to capture their reflection.
