Location
I took this image at the Cambridge Butterfly Conservatory in Cambridge Ontario.Time
It was in the afternoon on a sunny day. I was inside in the Conservatory.Lighting
Since it was inside, I needed no extra lighting. There was lots of natural light coming in from the glass circular roof as well as the windows all around the perimeter of the building. It was also humid because it was creating a tropical moist air for the plants and butterflies.Equipment
I was using my Nikon D3100, and my Nikon 18 - 55m at 25mm and it was handheld.Inspiration
It was an unusual sight to see the butterflies mating. I hadn't experienced this before in my many visits to the Conservatory. Since they were stationary I had plenty of time to capture this image, although from where they were on the leaves I didn't have a lot of room to look for a better location to create my capture.Editing
No this image is straight from the camera. I didn't feel I could enhance it from this look.In my camera bag
I had at this time my Nikon D3100, Nikon AF-S DX micro-nikkor 40mm, Nikon AF-P DX Nikkor Zoom 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR F/2.8G ,Sigma Telephoto Zoom 70-300mm f/4.0-5.6 APO DG Macro, Nikon MC-DC2 Remote Cord, Neutral density filters on each of my lenses. I also have variable density lens for each lens, 1 IR lens for the 18 - 55mm lens. Induro AKP2 Adventure Series Tripod w/ 3-Way Pan Head Kit, a 3 legged camp chair. All tucked into or on my camera bag. A Manfrotto Pro Light camera backpack 3N1-26 for DSLR/CSC/C100.Feedback
Since this was at a Conservatory and not in the wild it is easier to make captures of butterflies even if they are in constant motion. They do sit upon the food stations all around the conservatory, upon the plants and leaves that are abundantly available. You just need to walk around and watch where the butterflies go and hope some will sit on a leaf or flower near you.
