Behind The Lens

Location

This image was captured at the 2016 Rock The Arena Concert at The Mass Mutual Center in Springfield Massachusetts.

Time

The concert was an all day affair with many different acts playing throughout the day. Michael "Doc" Elllis was in the second to last band of the event, RATT.

Lighting

The lighting was actually pretty good for a concert. There weren't too many harsh spotlights and as I said the overall lighting was pretty good. No flash was used during this shoot.

Equipment

I shot this image with the Nikon D5300 and a Sigma 70-200 2.8 lens. Another photographer in the pit had actually laughed and commented that I was not using a "Pro" body. I will echo what has been said many times, it doesn't matter what "gear" you use, what matters is that you know how use it and get the best out of it.

Inspiration

Doc had moved out to the front of the stage in a highlighted performance. I unfortunately, or fortunately as with the shot, was located on the wrong side of the pit. I kept watching for the right moment, he moved to a perfect position and I fired off a couple of shots.

Editing

I did do some post processing on the image but not a whole bunch. Brought down some highlights, some contrast, and a few other minor adjustments in Lightroom. I also ran it through Photoshop with a minor exposure adjustment.

In my camera bag

I normally carry my Nikon D7100 which is my primary body, a Nikon D5300, at least one GoPro and several Sigma Lenses. I also carry some Yongnuo speedlights when I am shooting something other than concerts. My workhorse lenses are the 24-70 and 701-200 2.8 Sigmas and I carry the 17-50 Sigma and the 50mm 1.8 Nikon. The 50 is a great concert lens as well, I use the 50 a lot in clubs or bars to photograph bands and the shots are tack sharp and amazing.

Feedback

My advice to anyone trying to capture these types of images is get out there and shoot. Whether it be at bars or local clubs or big concert venues, the more experience you get, the better you will get. Be cordial and friendly to the other photgraphers and to the staff running the venue as this will help you get back in for another shoot.
