Location
This was taken at my parents back porch. I was about four to five feet away from the feeder, lens set to manual focus, hoping for a good capture.Time
It was just before 11am when the picture was taken, shutter at 1/4000th, Aperture 5.6, ISO 1250.Lighting
The lighting was always best in the first part of the day due to the feeder being on a porch, so the sun helped to keep the ISO from having to be too high.Equipment
This was shot with a Canon Rebel 6Ti with a Sigma DG 300mm macro lens in manual focus mode, no tripod and no flash, just lots of patience.Inspiration
Seeing other tremendous photos of hummingbirds made me want to try to get a similar capture.Editing
There is no post-processing at all with the photo, it isn't even cropped, directly as the camera took it.In my camera bag
I now carry in my bag a Canon EOS R mirrorless with an RF24-105mm lens, IRIX 15mm wide angle lens, and a Canon 100mm macro lens. When I go out birding, I pack my Canon L 100-400mm lens. The RF24-105mm lens has become my every day lens, very sharp pictures with it. I still plan on using my old Rebel T6i, lots of good memories with it.Feedback
Patience! It takes a lot of trial and error to capture hummingbirds, while I did freehand this picture, a monopod or tripod would be good if you have a feeder close or flowers so that you rest your arms. Study their patterns, for this one, I watched him come to the feeder over and over, so I setup to have my focus for a certain distance and was fortunate that the hummingbird was in exactly the right spot and the right time. Don't give up after a day, this shot took a few days to capture. While I do have some other very good pictures from that time frame, this is by far the best of my hummingbird pictures.
