Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on a beautiful 5 acre property that my Aunt used to own in a nearby rural community close to my hometown in Gahanna, Ohio.

Time

Taken on a beautiful Autumn afternoon when the light was just perfect.

Lighting

We had just the perfect afternoon lighting, not too bright but just enough to give us a perfect setting no matter where we were on the property. No flash or reflector used.

Equipment

This was shot with a Canon 7D with a Canon 70-200 f4.0 L series lens.

Inspiration

This was her senior session, so we were trying to capture the essence of her personality. Fun and bubbly but showing her softer and very beautiful side. This was probably one of my very favorite sessions to shoot because every shot I captured seemed to be perfect.

Editing

I do all of my post processing in Photoshop after making any necessary adjustments to the RAW file. Minor sharpening and minor skin touch ups.

In my camera bag

When I captured this image, I carried a Canon 7D with my 70-200 Canon F4.0 L series lens and my 24-105 Canon L series lens. Since this session, I have upgraded twice and currently always carry my Canon 5DMkiii and a Canon 6D with the above mentioned lenses.

Feedback

First and foremost, know your equipment and what settings to use in any circumstances; make adjustments as necessary during your session. I personally do not shoot with a flash much (unless I am in my studio) nor do I use a reflector much. I adjust my camera settings to get the right lighting. Second, get to know your subject, who they are, what their personality is. Try to capture it perfectly when you shoot. After taking a few shots at the beginning of each of my sessions, I quickly pick up on which is their best side to photograph, how to tilt their head just right, where to focus the eyes, etc. I do this just by watching them when they talk to me. Most importantly for me, I want to capture something truly special in their eyes, so I will sometimes have them look at different things around me before looking directly at the camera and taking my shot. The one comment I always get from clients is that I capture their eyes and personality perfectly. This is one thing I truly love about my craft.
