Behind The Lens

Location

This picture was taken in Rome and shows a man standing in front of the Ara Pacis Museum. He is an artist who was showing his work in front of the museum.

Time

I shot this picture in the late afternoon in January 2016.

Lighting

The light, even though it was on a late afternoon in January, was still good, I increased ISO on my camera and I shot.

Equipment

I used the camera that I use for street photography, a Fuji X100T, excellent for street photography! The camera is quite a compact mirrorless camera with a 16 MP APS-C sensor and a 23mm f/2 lens (equivalent to a 35mm in the 35mm format). I didn’t use a flash.

Inspiration

I liked how this person looked, I liked his black coat, that hair blown by the wind and his beard, he also had an expression on his face that made him intriguing. Also that wall was an excellent element. I waited for a long time before taking this picture, I didn’t want to have other subjects in it and I also didn’t want him to notice me, I was worried that he would change his expression, or even worse, smile. I walked on the sidewalk opposite him and as soon as I was in position, I turned and took the picture.

Editing

I only converted the image to black and white with Lightroom and adjusted the contrast.

In my camera bag

I usually carry with me my Fuji X100T with WCL-X100 wide conversion lens which allows me to make the lens a 28mm (35mm format). Instead when I travel, I bring my Canon 5d MIII, a 24-70 f2.8 L II Canon lens, a 35 mm f/1.4 DG HSM ART Sigma lens, and a Joby GorillaPod Focus.

Feedback

If you like street photography, I recommend buying a good camera, not too big, quiet and uncomplicated; prime lenses are usually small so you will be more invisible with a short lens than with a long one, also you won’t have time for zooming, this is another good reason to prefer prime lenses. Simplicity is the key! Learn to use your camera well so you don’t waste time with the settings while you are taking street shots, learn the zone focus well and walk around as if you were a tourist who looks a little lost, but always be aware of what is around you… and as soon as you see something that interests you, shoot! If someone gives you a nasty look, smile and walk away.
