Location
This photo was actually taken in a small wooded area next to my local dog park. I walk past it almost every day and really didn't pay much attention to it until I walked past one morning when the fog was rolling through.Time
One morning while walking my dog I happened to walk past it, it was an overcast day with some light drizzle and the fog rolled through the trees; I thought it looked amazing and spooky. I quickly rushed home to grab my camera and then rushed back to take the photo. On a sunny day you can actually see houses in the background but luckily the fog covered all of that to look like it is an actual forrest in the middle of nowhere.Lighting
As with most composites lighting is usually the hardest part. Matching up the light requires a lot of thinking ahead, luckily because it was so overcast the forest area was quite evenly lit and I knew I wanted a light shining down on the man like he is being beamed up which was easy enough to get. Then the rest was all just artificial light beams and doge and burns I added in PhotoshopEquipment
Like most photographers I use my trusty Canon 5D mark 3 for all my composite images and the lens I used was my Canon 16 - 35 f2.8 which I just love the look it gives.Inspiration
I have always loved imaginative images and movies and as amazing as practical effects are (like the images Benjamin Von Wong creates) when you are 14 years old and have spent all of your pocket money, creating practical effects doesn't really seem to practical. Which is why one of the happiest days of my life was when my teacher showed me Photoshop. I would sit in front of the computer for hours creating the small ideas I had and then working my way up to the images I create today. So that morning when I saw the trees and the fog I knew I wanted to create an alien abduction type of image and I knew I had the knowledge and tools to do it.Editing
Absolutely! I love using Photoshop to make these crazy ideas I have in my head a reality. The man was composited in along with the sticks and leaves floating around him. I then added a custom brush to erase bits of the man and add bits where there shouldn't be to give the disintegrated look. Then adding in some fake fog in the foreground so that the man actually looked like he was really in the scene. I then placed a light beam coming down over the man and finally color graded the image to give it that blue eerie feeling. In my camera bag
My bag is actually quite small because I prefer the run and gun style of shooting. I have my Canon 5D mark 3, my Canon 16 - 35mm f2.8, my Canon 50mm f1.8, my lens cleaner, a uv filter and a Speedlite.Feedback
To create an image like this you will need to keep an eye on the weather forecast, it might take a couple of times before you get a good photo as you don't want the mist to be too dense or light. Once you have the perfect background though the rest should all fit together. The image of the man is actually him jumping straight up in the air, arching his back and lifting his legs which then you just cut out and rotate in photoshop so that it looks like he is falling, or in this case being pulled up. Then all you need to do is erase bits and pieces of him, paint those bits and pieces above him. Add some sticks, leaves and fog, color grade the image to have a blue eerie feeling and you're all done.
