This was shot while wondering the forest trails North of Floodwood, Minnesota in a section of the state forest that borders the family hunting shack.Time
This was taken in the late afternoon (4:28pm) after having spent the early portion of the day photographing our kids and dogs playing among all the leaves on the ground.Lighting
I was out wondering around trying to find some color and a composition I liked and settled on this spot as the sun was no longer as harsh at this point, allowing me to capture the leaves as they glowed.Equipment
This was shot handheld with a Nikon D810A and a 70-200/F2.8 lens. (1/400 @ F/4, 200mm, ISO 800)Inspiration
I was just out exploring trying to capture a photo that said "fall" to me. Leaves were falling off trees everywhere and was just hoping to find that one spot that screamed out at me. Following a trail deep within the forest I happened on this spot where the sunlight filtering through just made the leaves glow.Editing
There wasn't a lot of post-processing for this photo. A slight exposure adjustment, addition of some contrast, minor vibrance, and then adjust the blacks to darken it.In my camera bag
This really varies...for photos out in the fall I normally have just one camera body and a selection of lens comprised of a good wide angle (16-35/F4), macro (105/F2.8), and my short telephoto (70-200/F2.8). I also include a circular polarize and a flash in my bag. Never know when you'll go from a nice landscape down to mushrooms on the ground.Feedback
I was surprised this was chosen the people's choice winner among the many excellent photos submitted. Really its just the basics, have patience and find what speaks to you. Find a good composition, shoot at various exposures (bracket), and as always follow where the light leads you.
