Location
This was a very basic setup, in my kitchen at home. Simple (borrowed) glass chess pieces and board, with a desk lamp at the far end, diffused with greaseproof paper.Time
Can't quite rember but probably while the kids were at school.Lighting
The lighting was very simple - a desk lamp at the opposite end to give that glow and normal daylight.Equipment
This was shot with a canon 500D, a 50mm lens (nifty fifty) with a wide open aperture and I also used a tripod.Inspiration
I had seen examples of this technique on the Internet, shot in studios and I wondered how I could make the same or similar shot with what I had lying around the house. I had to borrow the chess set!Editing
Post processing was simple, just a quick conversion to black and white in Photoshop. Nothing else has been done.In my camera bag
I now have a canon 7D, the same 50mm lens, a 17-40L lens and a couple of other bits and pieces.Feedback
Have a look around and see what you have lying around, you don't always need "real" equipment to get the shot. The most important piece of equipment is you, and your imagination. Photographers are problem solvers.
