For decades - maybe close to a century - Birmingham, Alabama was called the Magic City and the Pittsburgh of the South because of the booming steel industry that was located here. One of the major features of downtown Birmingham is Red Mountain, name such because of the iron ore visible on the sides on the mountain. US Steel had many furnaces producing steel in the area. Sloss furnace was one of them. Sloss sits right on First Avenue North as you enter downtown Birmingham. When it was a busy operating plant you could drive by and see huge buckets of molten steel being poured. I took this photo from atop the statue Vulcan, god of the forge, which stands atop Red Mountain.
