Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taking in Inverness High street on a dull summers day with a fantastic little model. I'm self taught to I'm still learning as I go but I was pretty pleased with how this turned out.

Time

I had arranged to meet the model and her mum around 1pm and we spent just over an hour walking around snapping away. This was one of the final images I had got on the day and had so much fun while shooting it. Several attempts to get the hat to balance long enough to slide down the rail resulted in lots of giggles from 9 year old Neva.

Lighting

For lighting I just stuck to natural lighting. I have an external flash but chose not to use it as the sky although dull still give the light that was needed to create the atmosphere within the picture we were looking for.

Equipment

I used a canon 1100D with a 18-55mm lens. I had other lenses and an external flash with me but I ended up not using any of them.

Inspiration

Neva was playing around during a 5 minuit break and started throwing the hat around and it gave me the idea of trying to slide it down the rail we were stood next to. After a few attempts and lots of laughing we finally caught the image I had in my head..

Editing

For post processing I used camera raw to over clarify the image to give it the grunge look and adjust the contrast a little. I don't like to over process images so I keep post processing to as minimul as possible.

In my camera bag

I've only been doing photography for a couple of years so my bag isn't full of equipment but I have a good range of lenses that I will keep building on. I have a canon 1100D camera body with 3 lenses. The lenses are, canon 18-55mm, sigma 28-200mm and a canon 36-78mm. I also carry my lightweigh tripod with me where ever I go, not an expensive one but it does the job that it's intented to. And my final piece of equipment is my Yonguno speedlight yn560 iv. A fantasticly made speedlight that is easy to use and works fantastic for weddings and portraits.

Feedback

My advice to capture an image like this? Have fun!! Play around and try different things, new angles and look at the object from a different perceptive. Theres more than one thing to do with a hat. If we hadn't of been laughing and joking around I don't think I would have got a picture like this.
