Behind The Lens

Location

We were caravanning on the east Coast of Australia. This is Lake Wivenhoe in Queensland.

Time

it's dusk, as the sun sinks behind the horizon lighting all around with gold, pink, and mauve.

Lighting

It's the golden hour before the night falls, creating beautiful reflections on the bottom of the clouds and in the water. The added bonus of silhouettes gives a striking picture.

Equipment

i use a digital light camera as I am mainly a bird photographer. It's Canon SX50 Powershot. The 50 zoom is significant. I held this by hand, no flash.

Inspiration

My husband is in the kayak returning to land and I was on the bank as he approached, taking photos of the scenery, birds & animals. The picture speaks for itself. It begged to be taken and I've always been thrilled to have captured this tranquil, serene memory which is now framed in our home.

Editing

i use Lightroom and love to play there with the possibilities of more of less light, with sharpening, with graduated filters, with cloning out smudges etc adding a vignette, to draw the viewers eye to the subject. i enjoy this process immensely.

In my camera bag

i carry a backpack. In it are my camera, binoculars, a tiny purse carrying an extra battery, a strap that goes over my shoulders to which I attach my camera on one side and binoculars on the other, giving me hands free when I release one to use the other one. i take lens cleanser.

Feedback

For me, when we camp by the lake it becomes easy to capture such images as we' re on the spot at those crucial times like early morn, and as the sun sets. Be prepared to get out and about at these times to get the best of the lighting and the amazing effects that Nature brings.
