Behind The Lens
Location
This image was taken at the Air and Space Museum in Farmingdale, Long Island, New York on Memorial Day. It was one of several vintage planes featured at this site.Time
I took this in the morning about 10 AM on a bright and sunny day.Lighting
Just sunlight. No flash needed.Equipment
I used my Canon 70D and Sigma 18- 250 mm telephoto lens. It was mounted on a tripod and I took three bracketed shots.Inspiration
I am a Marine Corps Veteran from the Vietnam era but I have always been proud and honored that my late dad served and fought as a Marine during WWII. The planes of that war are very interesting and the stories behind them are fascinating.Editing
I processed this image using Photomatix to combine the three brackets into a single image. I then further refined it in Photoshop to crop it, reduce noise and sharpen it as well as doing basic adjustments such as brightness and contrast. In my camera bag
Honestly, I rarely lug a bag around. I have an idea of what I plan on shooting and mount my Sigma 18-25-mm lens on my Canon 70d. This lens fits just about 95% of my needs. Sometimes I will carry my Canon 60mm Macro lens in case O need it in certain situations but I carry that in a simple pouch over my shoulder. I have several tripods but on a trip like this where I will be doing a lot of walking around, I carry the lightest one.Feedback
Check out special events in the paper and on the internet. This is particularly important around military or patriotic holidays. And choose a unique angle, especially if you need to block out distractions. In this B17 shot, there were a few people at the rear of the plane so I just set up to focus on the front.
