Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken several years ago at Christmas time at a location called Milleridge Inn in the town of Jericho, Long Island, NY.

Time

It was taken after sundown.

Lighting

It is all natural (ambient) light from the displays and shops on this street at the inn.

Equipment

I took this on a tripod with my Canon Rebel and 18-200mm telephoto lens set at wide angle, 18mm. ISO 200 and three shots bracketed -2, f11, +2. No flash.

Inspiration

I just happened to glance down the street and the overall ambience with the lighting and snowman just caught my eye. Thankfully, I had brought my tripod along just in case there was an image worth capturing. I am very glad I did. This scene just seemed to capture the Christmas Spirit.

Editing

I processed the three exposures in Photomatix as an HDR image and saved it as a TIFF. I then brought it into Photoshop and enhanced it with various settings to bring out all the details, reduce noise, etc.

In my camera bag

I am not one to lug around a lot of equipment. I plan ahead on what I might need for the particular trip and generally bring my basic camera with the lens I think I'll need plus perhaps one more lens. I have since upgraded to the Canon 70D and use a Sigma 18-250mm telephoto lens for the vast majority of my shots.

Feedback

Definitely bring along a tripod for night shots like this. Also, consider using a controlled HDR approach with bracketed shots. Easy on the HDR, though. Not too over the top.
