Behind The Lens

Location

On the Li River in Xingping, China

Time

Dusk, maybe an hour after sunset on an overcast day.

Lighting

I had toyed with the idea of using my speed lights for a more elaborate lighting setup, but decided against it after the sun set and I saw the natural beauty of the soft warm glow of lantern light juxtaposed against the cool blue of the evening sky.

Equipment

Nikon D800, 14-24 2.8, no tripod or other accessories. I'd normally be on sticks for evening shooting, but was run and gun and didn't want to eat up too much of his time but fumbling around with unnecessary equipment.

Inspiration

I had seen these fisherman floating up and down the Li River, and knew that the iconic imagery of these fisherman floating around mountain karsts that appears on the Chinese money was inspired by the folks of this region. After arriving, it was easy just to wander up to the docks and find a friendly fisherman who was willing to sit for a photo. I've seen many other photos of similar fisherman, so I'm pretty sure that photo tourism just as much as fishing is a part of their livelihoods, but regardless, I saw a beautiful scene so I captured it.

Editing

I brought down the levels in a the sky a bit just to bring more focus to the foreground, and popped the details in the shadows ever so slightly. Other then that, what you see is what I got.

In my camera bag

I usually carry 2.8 zoom lenses ranging from 14mm to 200mm, put a 2x teleconverter and macro tube extension. In addition to that, a large array of flashlight and a speed light for night painting, and a powerful laser pointer for find focus at night.

Feedback

Don't be shy! Even though there's a language barrier, its amazing how much can be communicated with hand signals and a smile, and I met some of the friendly folks while traveling abroad, even though our exchanges were limited.
