This photo was taken in Blue Rocks, Nova Scotia. Lovely place with incredible sunsets.Time
Golden hour, obviously! It was taken in August, so probably around 8pm.Lighting
I really liked the warmth of the light and the fact that the cat was walking toward it. It was perfect with the house washed by the light in the background.Equipment
This was shot with Canon Rebel XSi, with my 18-55 mm lens. No tripod. I was actually running behind this little guy!Inspiration
Blue Rocks is perfect for photos of sunset, but I wanted to capture the feeling of this place and of the whole trip. It was sort of out of time, out of space. There was a warm wind, we had been on the road the whole day (the whole week, actually), and I didn't want it to end. There was a feeling of being home, being where I was supposed to be. Then this cat appeared, played a little with us before heading toward the house in the background. The warm and the peace of this picture is exactly how I felt at the time.Editing
I did very little post-processing. I usually underexpose sunsets, so the colors are better. I adjusted the contrast and white balance and that's it.In my camera bag
I travel with very little equipment. Back to when the photo was taken, I had my Rebel XSi, my 18-55 (which I used almost all the time) and a 75-200 I use for macro. Since then I changed my camera and bought a 40mm which I love. I rarely use a tripod and I don't tend to bring it on vacation. No flash either. I do with the light I have.Feedback
The best advice to capture something similar is to be present and pay attention to what surrounds you. And be prepared to change your plans. This photo was a bit of luck, of course, as I didn't control that cat, I saw and followed him for a while before I got this shot. Be playful, spontaneous, and look where others don't.
