Location
This photo was taken from the Kapalua Coastal Trail on Maui.Time
It was taken at approximately 7:00 HSTLighting
It was close to sunset and the clouds were dimming the sunlight but it was still fairly bright out.Equipment
The camera used was a Canon 5D Mark 3 with EF 16-35mm f/2.8 L Series USM Lens. The tripod was a Manfrotto. I also used a Marumi Circular Light Control Filter #8.Inspiration
I love the beauty in this area. Maui has many beautiful sandy beaches but the volcanic rock formations here are just beautiful. It is very rugged and with a lot of contrast as a foreground to the blue pacific ocean. I also really like seeing the Island of Molokai in the background.Editing
I use Lightroom for post processing. I used the graduated filter to lower the brightness of the sky. The brush tool was used to highlife the rocks in the water and also to lower the brightness of the ocean. I also used the brush to add a touch of clarity to the rocky foreground. Lastly I added some vibrance, saturation, sharpening and a touch of viignetting. In my camera bag
Canon 5D Mark 3. 16-35mm f2.8 L, 25-105mm f4 L, and 70-200 F2.8 L Canon Lenses. Circular polarizer lenses and the Marumi Light Control #8 circular filtersFeedback
When photographing something like the ocean you would normally want something interesting in the foreground. A long exposure allowed the flat smooth ocean and movement of the clouds to stand out. A tripod is a must in this situation and a dark filter to get the long exposure because it was bright out. As I mentioned, I used a #8 solid circular filter to get a 25 second exposure at f16. To capture the foreground and back ground clearly, a good depth of field is required.
