Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on one of my biennial kayak trips to Corsica island. Besides the sporting opportunities, I love the islands variety in landscapes and rock formations an vegetation. The camera is always with me.

Time

This is one of my favorite kayaking images. It is typical for this sport that you are on location around midday. It takes time to get there. And one should have a good time reserve in case of running late because of problems. It is good to be out before dark.

Lighting

I have been at this spot several times. This time, all came together, people in position, colors and the sun came through casting a slightly hazy light giving a magic look to the froth and the polished rocks.

Equipment

This was done with the Pentax Optio W20, a waterproof digital PS camera. Its modest zoom capability, built in metering and compactness were a great step up from my previous indomitable Nikonos III film camera.

Inspiration

Corsica, "Ile de beauté" is always an inspiration. Go slow, keep eyes open, and keep your camera ready.

Editing

Only minimal post-processing was done on this image, like levels-contrast adjustment, color balance.

In my camera bag

I like shooting with DSLR cameras a lot. Two things still stand out with this technology. The immediacy of getting ready to shoot when the camera needs to be started up. The second big advantage is battery life when the camera is on. On safari, I always got through the day, taking hundreds of clicks with a DSLR, without recourse to the spare battery. On a kayaking trip, my high risk DSLR, the Nikon D7100, stayed turned on and ready in the ewa-marine bag for ten days. On a safari or a similar trip the bag, a 35 l backpack, contains the D7200 with the 16-80mm for close motifs, the D850 with 70-200mm f/2.8 main camera and the D500 with 200-500mm for reach. For a hiking day trip, I often settle for the D7200 with the 16-80mm. When the focus is on people, I love to have the D800 and Nikon 105mm f/1.4 in the bag. in the day pack.

Feedback

I like to estimate the likely photo opportunities ahead and then pick equipment specifically. It feels good to be not overloaded. -- If I can, I choose trip and travel destinations on expectations for photo opportunities.
