What an absolutely stunning gown ! Great photo. Something is bothering me, could your levels be a bit off? See if you get your levels right, whether this photo would not just absolutely pop!

Behind The Lens

Location

A friend asked me to photograph her granddaughter's wedding in Spokane, Washington.

Time

The wedding was held late in the afternoon. This photo was shortly before the ceremony.

Lighting

The lighting is actually in front of the bride as she steps out onto a covered balcony. I angled the camera downward which helped deflect the sunlight.

Equipment

I used an oldie but goodie Canon Rebel XSi with the standard 18-55 mm lens. No flash, no tripod, I used a stepstool to get above the bride.

Inspiration

I have commercially shot room photos and often get above the room to get a good angle. Since the hallway was narrow and the bride had a gorgeous train, I wanted to try this angle. It worked! The picture I had in mind was of her sweeping through the French doors to the man waiting to make her his wife. I was looking for something a bit dramatic and feel I got what I was after.

Editing

I flipped it to black and white only, no other post processing. Felt it didn't need it.

In my camera bag

For weddings, I now carry a Canon Rebel X5i, Canon 70-200mm, Canon 18-55mm and Canon 85mm. I do use a tripod for the group shots but often free hand it for the candid shots. I use a speedlite as necessary too depending on the time of day that I will be shooting.

Feedback

Think outside of the box! I like to go to the wedding site ahead of time so I can explore what looks best. Too much commotion on the wedding day. With this beautiful old house, I had the bride stand in the window of the balcony looking down at her un-suspecting groom below. I got the picture by laying on the ground looking up at both of them. This particular shot that I got was actually inspired by models in magazines.
