Here is something we can learn from JustinRussoPhotography about the techniques and story behind this awarded photo.

1. JustinRussoPhotography, where did you take this photo?

Lost Dog Lake, Algonquin Park

2. What time of day?

This was around 11 o'clock at night.

3. Anything worth sharing about lighting?

I used my headlamp to fill in the rocks and the water in the foreground painting it in a circular motion.

4. What equipment did you use?

I used a Nikon D800 with a Nikon 14-24 2.8 lens.

5. What inspired you to take this photo?

I have always loved looking up into the night sky. Whenever I get up north I always look for an opportunity to photograph the stars in a different way. I was blessed with a calm clear night and an interesting rock pattern in the foreground.

6. Did you do any post-processing? if yes, tell us about it!

I used Lightroom to level my image. Nothing out of the ordinary done here.

7. What equipment do you normally have in your bag?

When out shooting nature I usually have with me two bodies, Nikon D800 and a Nikon D600. My lenses include Nikon 14-24 2.8, 24-70 2.8, 70-200 2.8 vr, Nikon 600mm f4 vr, Nikon tc 1.4 and 1.7, a nikon sb-700. My tripod of choice for the 600mm is a Sirui R4203.

8. Any advice for others trying to capture something similar?

Really experiment with different angles and compositions, one slight move of the camera may make your image composition more complete. Once I established my composition it took me a few attempts to get the lighting the way I visualized in my mind.
