Here is something we can learn from CanadianOutlaw about the techniques and story behind this awarded photo.
"I call myself an OUTLAW when it comes to my work. I shoot what I want , when I want and how I want ! My name is Will and I'll shoot you later!  I try to keep my shots original and unedited. I want you to see what I saw not what I created."

1. Where did you take this photo?

I took this photo at a wildlife sanctuary. I'm not one for shooting kept animals, but upon arriving I saw the animals were very well fed and anything that was fenced had more than ample enough space to roam. There was shaded areas provided and the areas looked so clean, I decided I would shoot a few pictures as the animals look so healthy. This picture was shot in Quebec, Canada.

2. What time of day?

This shot was taken around 12-1pm as the sun was high and warm. The fox was in such a playful mood. I was throwing snowballs and it was chasing them. Never played fetch with a fox lol. I took 12 pics of that fox and kept 2.

3. Anything worth sharing about lighting?

I stage nothing in outdoor shots at all. As a photographer, sometimes we just have to hope for good weather and that the sun is in the right position at that moment of execution to avoid sun flares and light spots.

4. What equipment did you use?

I used a Canon T3i.  I have a few lenses, no pro glass in my bag, but that just makes me work harder to compete on viewbug with the pros. Sometimes heart and patience prevails over tricks and bucks. The lens I used that day was a 75-300, free hand as I've never removed my tripod from the bag since the day I bought it - lol .

5. What inspired you to take this photo?

I took this photo for me. I have never seen this species of foxes in Ontario so I wanted to capture a memory. Little did I know, I got home and realized that I caught a really good shot. It wasn't until I randomly threw it on ViewBug and into its first contest when I realized it was better than great according to my peers. The fact that it won runner up in its first contest and has gotten so many awards makes me smile and feel like I've captured a cool memory for years to come.

6. Did you do any post-processing? If yes, tell us about it!

I adjusted the contrast a tad. I felt the whites all together were washing out the pic too much so I did a tiny tweak to give the viewers the vision I saw that day.

7. What equipment do you normally have in your bag?

I carry a Canon T3i body, a 18-55mm and the 75-300mm lens (non pro). I carry a cleaning cloth for my lenses, a water proof bag in case I need to wrap my camera from rain, a pocket knife and a small pocket sized air horn in case of large curious animals.

8. Any advice for others trying to capture something similar?

My advice is to have fun. If that shot doesn't come today there's always tomorrow. This is a hobby to me and I allow my heart to get involved, let the passion flow though my lens, try shooting the picture for yourself  before you shoot it for a contest and I'll bet the results feel better with less pressure too. SHOOT THE PHOTO FOR YOU!
