Behind The Lens

Location

It was taken at the crossroads of 5th ave and the E 54st, New York City.

Time

It was 29th of december, days before Christmas and i was just arrived in the city. After a whole day of walking and exploring the streets with my girlfriend, under the cold of winter, i was heading to the Apple store of the 5th ave to pick-up my new iphone in a window between 7:15pm - 7:30pm. So this photo was probbably a minutes before that, when i found out interesting elements to be captured by my camera.

Lighting

Usually in New York streets the light comes from everywhere, even more at night, like the carlights and the buildings or stores facades for an example. But this particular spot called my attention because behind the steam cloud, the buildings were dark enough to make a great contrast between the steam and its background. Apart from that, it is crucial the use of a tripod for sharp night photograpgy, specially for light trails with static backgrounds.

Equipment

I use a Canon Rebel T6i, with a 18-55mm lens, on a tripod. I also shot it with timmer of 2s so i don´t make any unwanted move.

Inspiration

The shot wasn´t planned at all. I was just walking the street very tired, looking forward to arrive at the hotel and rest a couple of hours. But when i crossed in front of that steam cloud, it really caught my attention, in fact, during my stay i was curious about why that happens all around the city, till i found out i was wondering about the steam system. So i stop in thar corner to shot, i had the fortune the wind makes the steam cross above the street, so after a couple of fast shots, i thought it would be better to make a longexposure shot with a much bigger steam cloud and the car lights at the bottom. I took a few looking for taxis to make it more interesting and meaningfull.

Editing

Yes, i used Luminar 4 to contrast a bit the steam, and of course to make the cab the real protagonist of the photo. As it was the only object moving and in the foreground, i convert the rest in black and white.

In my camera bag

I usually travel with 2 extra lenses, a Canon 75-300mm telephoto and a Rokinon primary 14mm f2.8. I also carry a portable lightweight ball tripod, 2 extra batteries, a neutral density filter and of course a couple of cleaning cloths.

Feedback

As i said, i haven´t planned the photo, but you can follow the steps i tell in how i get inspired. If one thing is for sure, is you need to shoot practice shots when you find the spot and you already have your idea of what you want to capture. In my case, the primary elements of the photo weren´t together at the first time, but i was already shooting to make sure that when they actually do, the background, the light and the people where ready.
