This is Lisa Myklak in her race run at the 2009 US National Mountain Bike Championships at Sol Vista Mountain in Granby, CO.Time
It was around 4pm.Lighting
I used 3 flashes to light up riders on this part of the course. Without flashes, the image would be so much flatter with shadows from the sun on the riders.Equipment
Canon 50D, Sigma 10-20 f/4-5.6, 3x Vivitar 285HV flashes on tripods or mounted to trees, 4x Pocket WizardsInspiration
I got really into sports photography at around the same time I started racing mountain bikes. I went to this event to cover it for a website and compete. I really like capturing a shot of an athlete in a moment focus, at the right time and on an interesting/exciting section or feature and getting them to pop in the shot over the background.Editing
I just did basic global processing in Lightroom (contrast & color). In my camera bag
It depends on what kind of shoot it is. When I shoot mountain biking, I have my 5D mk-III or 1D mk-IV with a 70-200, 50mm, 40mm or 30mm, 10-16. I usually have 1-3 flashes (with pocket wizards) that mount on two tripods or two 10' lightstands strapped to the side. I've even strapped two folded 3.5 softboxes to the back as well. Yes, I have crashed while riding with my bag loaded with all that... Random items include food, water, tools, spare parts and adapters, sunscreen, business cards, flash cards, batteries, ultrapod, etc.Feedback
Take your flash off the camera.
