Behind The Lens

Location

After hiking in Cornwall from Tintagel back to Boscastle in June I was treated to this stunning sunset. A great end to my birthday.

Time

The sky was starting to look nice as I approached Boscastel so I decided to make the effort to get up onto the cliff tops for 9pm to enjoy the last light of the day.

Lighting

I wanted to get something interesting in the foreground and didn't want the sun to be too low in the sky as it would have cast a shadow on the hillside and changed the photo completely.

Equipment

I had a number of lenses with me but decided the Samyang 14mm at F8, 1/125, ISO 500. This was shot handheld with the Canon 5DSR.

Inspiration

I have always loved the Cornish coastline and had seen other photos from this location. I had planned a stay in Boscastle for my birthday and was hoping for some good light to end the day so that I could try to do the landscape justice.

Editing

I didn't have to do a great deal of editing in this one. A few tweaks in Lightroom to bring out the colours and lighten the shadows was all that I felt was needed.

In my camera bag

I usually have two different bags. One has my Canon 7Dii with a Sigma 150 - 600, 24mm and 10-18mm. The other has my Canon 5DSR with 70-200, Samyang 14mm, Canon 85 & 50mm prime lenses. These bags come with me everywhere in the car and between them provide everything I need for wildlife or landscape photography. I also have a Mavic Air 2 drone for those interesting angles in hard to access places.

Feedback

Get out there... Visit beautiful places for the first or last hour of light. Give yourself plenty of time to appreciate the landscape and decide on your composition. Enjoy the moment and try to capture the feeling in your photo.
