Location

I took this photo outside in my flowerbed.

Time

I wanted to try getting shots of this tiger lily at night using a small light held above it. I put my camera on a tripod. I always use my camera in manual mode. I used a 6400 ISO because it was so dark out and set my camera to 1/90s exposure, an aperture of f/4.5 and a focal length of 34.0mm. I was almost on top of the lily to get this photo.

Lighting

I wanted to try a small light shining either above or at an angle from above, otherwise everything was in total darkness as it was very late outside. I also needed to use a flashlight to help me set my camera settings up.

Equipment

I used my Canon Rebel T3i camera with a 18-55mm lens, a tripod and a small flashlight.

Inspiration

I had read about taking photos at night using flashlights and this intrigued me. I wanted to try it out to see how it worked. I had not taken night photos like this before. I found it was really enjoyable.

Editing

Yes I did do post processing. First l had to reduce the noise that was in the photo because it was quite dark outside. I wasn't as happy with the original coloring of the orange on the flower, so I used a photo program and changed the color of the orange to a lighter blue and adjusted the vibrance and saturation. I then added a bit of light and color to the center of the flower and then added a vignette.

In my camera bag

Normally I take my camera and the three lenses that I have, my camera bag, a couple of tripods; one is very low, sitting very close to the ground, the other is a regular tripod. As this was taken just outside my house, I only took what I needed at the time.

Feedback

Practice. practice and practice. Every picture is a great picture, even ones that would be deemed terrible. I look at the "bad ones", the ones that did not turn out as my educational material. I go through them and try to figure out what went wrong and figure out how to improve it. I have gotten many great photos from doing just this. If you are still having trouble or can't figure something out, then go ask someone for help or advise or maybe take a course to help. There are many good online classes out there. But all else practice and practice often.
