I lived nearby and noticed a prediction for early morning clouds the next day so I set my alarm and arrived before dawn in anticipation of what was to come. As the sun approached the horizon and started to gently light the sky a lifeguard boat slowly made its way towards me from the opposite side of the lake. As luck would have it the small ripples it created added just that little something extra this photo benefited from.

Location
This photo was taken at a lake about 5 minutes from where I was living at the time. Once there it involved another 20 minute walk/jog to my desired location.Time
I'd checked the weather the night before and new there was a chance for an epic sunrise so I grabbed some coffee, my camera gear, and headed over.Lighting
The lake is surrounded on all sides by subtle rising slopes as well as a levee directly behind where I took the shot. I think the darkness that barrier added to this shot gives it that feelingEquipment
This was shot on my Sony a7 with a Zeiss 16-35mm. I used my MeFoto Tripod along with a remote shutter.Inspiration
I'd been to this lake multiple times and had actually spotted a lifeguard shackhouse on the water just to my left and behind me that was the actual intended subject. I thought would make a good backdrop/possible reflection in the early morning light but took this before there was more light for a better reflection shot.Editing
I typically import my raw photos into lightroom and start there with any exposure, color, contrast adjustments, etc. Then I export it to PhotoShop to adjust the midtones. In my camera bag
Nowadays I have my Sony a7iii along with a slew of lenses. A Rokinon 8mm fisheye, Rokinon 14mm, Zeiss 16-35mm, Sony 24-70mm, Sony 28mm, Sony 50mm.Feedback
For a shot like this, early bird gets the worm. Make the effort to get there early enough to set up for the ideal shot. Have a good tripod, a remote shutter, and don't be hesitant to open that f stop and or increase the exposure time.
