Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at the Cleveland Ohio Air Show in 2019 on the southern shore of Lake Erie. My first capture of a vapor cone!

Time

This photo was taken around midday in August.

Lighting

The day started with many clouds but as the airshow was about to start, the clouds above the centerpoint of the show began to clear. The sun was to my back at this point in the show.

Equipment

I used a Nikon Mirrorless Z6 camera with the 24-70mm f4 lens. The camera was handheld. I also had a cpl on the lens.

Inspiration

The F-35 is very fast! I was trying to learn the autofocus features including focus tracking of the latest Z6 firmware update. The vapor cone represents a speed less than the speed of sound where the vapors on the surface of the jet vaporize due to the heat generated from the speed. I was able to capture the fast moving F-35 with the vapor cone handheld! It took a little anticipation and tracking to get the shot.

Editing

I did crop the photo. Otherwise just a little noise reduction (although it really didn't need much).

In my camera bag

I normally have the camera body, two lenses (24-70mm f4 and a 50mm f1.8 in the camera bag as well as a cpl on each lens. I tend to only take a minimum amount of gear, so I can focus on the type of shooting I am doing for that day. I also have an extra battery and QXD memory card in the bag along with a cleaning cloth. Sometimes I use a tripod, but mostly handheld.

Feedback

Watch the pattern of the flight, anticipate the location of the plane. Watch where the sun is. I don't have a long lens so I focused on a wider angle shots for the formations during the show. The F-35 was an unannounced surprise, so I did the best I could with the equipment I have. Always a learning experience!
