This photo was taken in my sunroom. The flower is part of a small flower arrangement that is sitting on the coffee table.Time
The photo was taken about 2pm. Normally the sun would be far too strong coming in the windows but the clouds were muting the light.Lighting
The muted light was good, though it required some arrangement of the flowers and me to avoid a shadow. With the flower facing the lightest side of the room and me on my knees taking the picture from somewhat below the flower, the light was perfect with no flash needed.Equipment
This photo was taken with my Fuji XT-2 using the XF60mm Macro lens. The photo was then uploaded onto my iPad.Inspiration
Where I live, winter can feel very long and very monochrome! As spring inches closer, the desire - no, the need - for colour is overwhelming. Since it’ll be a few more weeks before flowers bloom, a trip to the flower shop was necessary. Once the flowers were in the house my camera called to me! The flowers may only last a week or so but the photos are there to look at until the garden fills.Editing
I often play with photos to arrive at something that invokes the feeling I have taking the picture and come up with a finished product that feels artful. I have close to twenty different editing, filtering and adjustment apps on my iPad and sometimes use a number of combinations. In this case post processing was pretty straightforward and done in Lightroom on my iPad. I decreased the exposure just slightly, cropped to a square and applied some sharpening so that the one predominant petal was quite crisp. I then applied the Lightroom Artistic 04 filter as it really brought out the silver tones in the petals. In my camera bag
I love my Fuji XT-2. It’s fairly light, easy to use and the Fuji lens’s are a pleasure to work with. I have a macro lens, a wide angle, a zoom and the kit lens. They all live nicely in my backpack. When working with flowers, plants and people I typically choose the macro lens. The zoom is great when taking animal photos and the wide angle for landscapes. The lens that seems to provide the most artful photos for me is the macro lens. Having said that, a lot of my photos are taken with my iPhone 7!Feedback
This photo required me to be on my knees to get below the flower and awkwardly bent to get the predominant petal in the right light. While top down flower photos can be quite lovely, I find I often get the best results by getting to eye level or below and using side views. I typically take several photos at different heights and perspectives. And I am continuously delighted with getting to know a flower better by changing perspectives.
