Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken from a friend's deck in Tobermory Ontario. We were still at the dinner table when I looked outside at the sky. I had my camera and lens's with me hoping for a sunset. I raced out to take pictures. Good thing I have very indulgent friends!

Time

Sunset was around 9pm. These colours only lasted about 20 minutes. I think I took about 40 pictures in that 20 minutes.

Lighting

The Bruce Peninsula has fabulous light. Some sunrises and sunsets are bold and brilliant while some, like this sunset, have that magical soft lighting that reminds me of candy floss.

Equipment

I used my Fuji XA1 with my 50-140 zoom lens. I did not use a tripod for this but I did carefully steady myself on the deck rail.

Inspiration

I love colour! Nature's ability to offer up spectacular colour never ceases to amaze me. I want to capture and share what nature puts on display. And there is something about a photo of sunset that makes you breathe deeper and smile.

Editing

Post-processing on this photo was minimal. In Lightroom I brightened things up a bit, added some sharpness and deepened the blacks. It really didn't need much.

In my camera bag

I keep a back pack ready to go with my Fuji XA1, the kit lens, the zoom lens, a wide angle lens and a macro lens. I have a fold up tripod that attaches to the pack and doesn't weigh very much. If I'm going out hiking or just out and about and don't want the weight of the back pack I have a great Fuji Finepix that takes great photos.

Feedback

I see a lot of sunset pictures where the colours are truly lovely but the photo falls short because the overall composition is lacking. Remember, in the excitement of those colours appearing, to carefully compose the shot. Frame the light, look for trees or landforms that will offer contrast. While not an absolute rule, most sunsets and sunrises are more interesting when there are clouds. Check the weather forecast and be patient!
