Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo on one of the late afternoon walks along the beach in Turks & Caicos. I wanted to get a photo using a slower shutter speed to give the water a soft look.

Time

This was taken in the afternoon about 4pm. The sun was starting to lower but not anywhere near the Blue hour.

Lighting

I took advantage of the warmth of the sunlight, not yet sunset, but in the warmth of the afternoon sun which was lower in the sky. I need that light as I wanted natural light.

Equipment

This was shot with my trusty Canon 70D with a tripod, and my standard zoom lens. I believe I also used an ND filter.

Inspiration

My inspiration was simply the need to practice slower shutter speeds during the day and use my ND filter. Is there a better subject than moving water? Plus, I could spend a long time on the beach just getting shots.

Editing

I always shoot in raw, my goal is to "get it right in the camera". So when it came to processing, I only used a bit of hue control and texture.

In my camera bag

I usually go out with my zoom lens and my prime 50mm. Depends on what I'm shooting and what look I want, or at least try for. So, I may have my macro lens &/or my crystal ball. Tripod and remote timer usually for night shots.

Feedback

You have to find a focal point or something interesting for the foreground and then you have to just have patience to try different F stops, shutter speeds and ISOs. I generally aim to have the waves/surf soft, ie. that dreamy kind of look and adjust my shutter-speed to something that I like. During the daylight, It's interesting to "play" with a ND filter: mine is graduated, so sometimes I get it too dark, because I have forgotten to adjust the F stop. Steak out your shot before hand to see the light & shadows or the best composition & perspective.
