Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Chattanooga, Tennessee. I am an outdoorsy, moody but realistic themed photographer that captures the true emotion of unique love. This bridge is an iconic location in Chattanooga that everyone takes photos at. I wanted something unique and creative, which was accomplished by dancing, laughing, and enjoying one another's love around strangers.

Time

Out of my three years of photographing individuals for self-love or couples because they adore one another, this will always be my favorite. After photographing them for an hour and a half, the sun was almost gone, we were walking off of the bridge back to our vehicles when I told them to dance like no one is watching. After holding down the shutter to capture every single moment, this made the most memorable because if their two smiles, slight lean backward, and holding on tight doesn't define love, I am not sure what does.

Lighting

The lighting of this photo was the hardest. After sunset, all photographers know you get "blue 20" which is the last leg of light before it gets dark and creates a naturally grainy photo from pushing the ISO up high and trying to keep the shutter high for no motion blur. Although I had doubts of the original photo prior to post-processing, the camera's natural grain and my personally developed preset in Lightroom helped me accomplish a moody love that just makes you wonder, "where is my love around strangers, like this?"

Equipment

This photograph was shot on a Nikon D5600 with a 50mm f/1.8. The image was taken at 2500 ISO, shutter of 125, and f/1.8.

Inspiration

This photo was inspired by capturing true love in a busy situation. Imagine there are quite of people around and you only noticing your significant other. I wanted to attempt this, but also create a unique photo of a place everyone captures. With this photo, I was able to create the captivating love for them and get out of the typical photo for this location.

Editing

This photo was part of my typical post-processing routine. With this, I utilize Adobe Lightroom to edit all of my photos with my own preset. This preset gives you those mood tones, keeps the oranges and browns while getting rid of greens. Following adding the present, I bumped up the shadows since they were tremendously dark. Lastly, I have a technique I do to smooth out individuals skin to give a nice glow and make them pop a little more than before.

In my camera bag

As this photo was shot with the Nikon D5600 and 50mm f/1.8, I have recently upgraded which makes the old camera obsolete. Currently, I have a Nikon Z6 accompanied by my 35mm f/1.8 and 85mm f/1.8. If I could go back and redo this photo, I would use my 35mm f/1.8 to capture more of the area, but also my Nikon Z6 allows for more pull or shadows and less natural grain with higher ISO.

Feedback

I think the biggest thing to understand when capturing couples is make it fun! I know this might be hard, but learn those prompts that get them out of their comfort zone and makes images that aren't posed and only actions. Another would be to get comfortable yourself with giving fun, impromptu prompts of actions for a couple despite it might seem super silly. As the photographer, you are capturing their love as they exemplify it, but in your own way - make it worth every moment to continue growing the portfolio with new material from these prompts!
