Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on the edge of a cliff at the top of Molas Pass in Durango, Co.

Time

We were driving through the mountains in the evening and stopped at the top of the pass before heading to another location for sunset.

Lighting

This photo was taken in the shade with a little bit of sunlight shining through the top of the frame. Proper exposure is everything. Shooting at an iso that allows you to keep your highlights while being able to brighten your shadows and keep detail will help maximize the color range.

Equipment

I was shooting freehand with a Sony a7ii and the 28-70 f3.5-5.6 kit lens

Inspiration

Sitting on the edge of that cliff I looked out at the mountains and down into the ocean of trees and realized that I was sitting in anamazing place. I wanted to share my point of view, not as a photographer, but as a person enjoying nature.

Editing

My work flow typically focuses on bringing back shadows. I shoot underexposed to allow for a lower iso and more possibilities in post.

In my camera bag

In my bag I carry my camera with my single lens on it (hopefully soon I can expand), a cleaning kit, a ND4 filter and a CPL filter, a spare SD card, and a lot of extra batteries. I also try to always bring an extra jacket, a water bottle , and snacks. Happy photographers shoot better photos!

Feedback

Be smart and do not take unnecessary risks. Getting the shot means nothing if you can’t share it afterwards. Also try to incorporate your own touch into pictures. Don’t just look to take the same picture you saw on Instagram or the one you saw win a contest; use it as motivation and inspiration about how you can share your own story.
