Behind The Lens

Location

In my home studio in corringham I had a shoot arranged with a male model that day and a mutual friend wanted to come along as she is a HMUA and model . This was one of the shots we took when it was her turn.

Time

About noon as we had already been shooting for a couple of hours with the other model that day. So we started to experiment at this stage.

Lighting

The lighting was a beauty dish with a grid camera left. I pulled it back an extra metre than normal in order to make the light harder and then blocked out her left eye by getting the other model to hold some cardboard.

Equipment

Sony A7, Canon EF 100mm, standard beauty dish and and Elinchrom RX4 light.

Inspiration

I had already some success creating slices of light before, I had seen a few photos blocking out faces or eyes. I really wanted to created shapes and blocking one eye does this. I generally veer towards triangle shapes in photograpy.

Editing

The usual photoshop clean the skin and a little bit of frequency separation. Colour graded after converting to black white with a little bit of violet in the shadows.

In my camera bag

I always have a colour checker and a light meter. These two things are a life saver if used all the time.

Feedback

Experiment with harder lighting and pulling the light further from the model than usual. Cheap item such black card or foam board can be used, it helps to have another person holding it while using the modeling on the highest setting.
