Behind The Lens
Location
This was taken just outside of Cedar City Utah.Time
I believe this was around 10 in the morning. Not the best light.Lighting
The light wasn't the best as it was after the golden hour just after sunrise. I was concentrating more on composition than lighting.Equipment
I shot this with a Nikon D800 handheld and no tripod or flash.Inspiration
I always get inspired when I see road shots on ViewBug. I was trying to capture the leading lines of a road shot here. I was standing on a small rise and was able to capture the entire road as it went off in the distance. There is very little traffic and didn't have to wait to get this without cars driving on it.Editing
I do 95% of my post-processing in Lightroom. I will use Photoshop if I need to go further in my processing like removing something that distracts from the image. This one was totally done in Lightroom. I adjust for brightness and to bring out shadows. This one I used clarity to bring out the detail in the road just a bit more. That was all that was done.In my camera bag
I don't use a bag anymore. I have a belt that holds up to three lenses and my lens cleaning kit. Depending on what I am doing will dictate what I bring with me. I use a Sigma 24 - 105 f/2.8 for a lot of my images. I can carry three lenses in my belt packs. One is my Nikkor 105 macro f/2.8. Another lens is my Tamron 150 to 600 f/5-6.3. The last one that I use the most is my Tamron 15 - 30 f/2.8. I have other lenses but rarely bring them out. I have two that are more than 30 years old and still use on occasion, a Nikkor 50 f/1.8 and a Nikkor 70 - 200 f/2.8 and both do not have autofocus. I have other lenses but they are for my cropped sensor cameras. I also have the Nikon D810 which I purchased after I took this shot. I use Rapid straps for both the 800 and the 810.Feedback
Road shots are everywhere and just keeping yourself open to shoot them is probably the most important thing to keep in mind. Try to shoot from different perspectives as this one was taken low to the ground as I was squatting down. Sometimes we shoot from a standing position way too often. Change it up as often as you can. And lastly just get out there and shoot. You will never get the image if you don't get out there.
