Location
This was taken in Yosemite in Central California.Time
It was a little before 11 in the morning on February 23, 2016.Lighting
The lighting wasn't the best as it was near noon but this angle that I shot everything had lots of definition in the rock faces.Equipment
I shot this with my Nikon D800 and my lens was the Tamron 150 - 600 zoom and I had it set at 150 with f/5 and 1/1000 shutter speed. ISO was 100. This was hand held and no flash or tripod was used for this shot.Inspiration
We had gone to Yosemite to capture Fire Falls that only happens for about 2 weeks in February. And since Ansel Adams is one of my favorite photographers I was inspired to capture Half Dome in B/W. I took several knowing I was going to convert to B/W and this one was my personal favorite. I wanted to capture something just a little different than what I normally see of Half Dome.Editing
I processed this in LightRoom and it was cropped to what I wanted. Once converted to B/W I went and darkened the sky, increased the contrast and clarity. I brought down the highlights and brought up the shadows. I also used the Dehaze and increase that as well.In my camera bag
My usual is a belt that carries two lenses, Tamron 150-600 zoom and my Nikkor 105 macro. My camera, Nikon D800, usually has my workhorse lens, Sigma 24-105. In a back pack I sometimes carry my Tamron 15-30 superwide angle zoom. I also sometimes carry a back up camera, Nikon D7000. I always carry my lens cleaning kit, spare batteries etc also. I have other equipment that I pick and choose from including many things for studio work like lights, umbrellas, light boxes etc.Feedback
My advice to get a shot like this is number one get out and shoot. I almost shoot daily. Go to National Parks and realize that you don't have to have perfect lighting like in my case it was close to noon. With the cliffs thou I had a lot of shadows and detail because of the suns angle and that says be aware of the lighting at all times. I shoot in manual probably 95% of the time because I like to control every aspect of the image. I use the light meter that is built into the camera as I have no other light meter.
