It is just a little game we play, she and i.
In each July -- except 2016 when her rhythm was disturbed by major renovations in the apartment -- she'd produce a few buds. She would keep them closed for quite a long time (by plant standards, i'd say), and would not let them erupt into a gorgeous, red bloom unless i begged her. She expects me to talk to her, play music to her, think nicely of her while i am at work for a week or so before the bud is allowed to rip open.
And then the flower would last about 24 hours, maybe less... so timing is crucial.
Each year i talk to her at length and explain that she should go into bloom before i leave on vacation. Preferably on a weekend so that i get to admire the bloom and take photos of it. She would then graciously listen to me and 9 times out of 10, she would comply.
It's a little game we play, she and i.
