On April 21, 1917, moviegoers leaving the Treadwell Club observed the start of the cave in which led to the closure of the Treadwell Mine on Douglas Island, across Gastineau Channel from downtown Juneau, Alaska. This was taken at the cave in site near sunset on April 21, 2017. One miner was unaccounted for following evacuation of the mine. The mine also employed horses, many of which were killed when the mine flooded. Today, little remains of the vast operation which operated for 40 years.
