I think I was quite lucky with the lighting. There was no artificial lighting used in this image. With the time being early evening and the venue having clear glass panels instead of walls, the perfect amount of natural light was allowed into the location.Equipment
I used a Canon 700D, with a Canon 50mm f/1.4 USM lens. No tripod or flash used.Inspiration
I was covering a family gathering, at about lunchtime when while casually shooting, I took a side profile of this beautiful lady. It took me a moment to realize that her side, the angle, and the background all went together so well, and I just had to approach her and ask her to pose for a solo. It took me 10 good minutes to move everybody behind away and move all the food off the tables. But in the end, it was all worth it!Editing
For each of my photos, I use Adobe Lightroom. I'm fairly new to photographing people and portraits, and I'm not quite skilled with photoshop so the only post processing was in the lighting of the image. Shadows were made brighter, highlights were made dimmer to balance out the entire image. In my camera bag
As a student, I'm on a tight budget, so all I have in my bag is my handy Canon EOS 700D with a battery grip always attached, a Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 lens, a Canon 50mm f/1.4, a Canon 55-250mm, and the standard canon 18-55 kit lens. Besides these I carry my tripod around, a bunch of spare batteries, an SD Card case, and most importantly a lens cleaning kit, with a few spare lens caps, and hoods.Feedback
Since I'm fairly new to people and portraits, I could use some advice myself. But in my case I would say keep looking for different angles before taking a picture. I started off by just standing and taking this picture, but then I knelt down and took the picture from a lower angle, which made it look much better in my opinion. Other than this, a pretty basic rule would be to ALWAYS ensure good lighting. Lastly, when it comes to people, the direction in which your subject is looking makes a huge difference in your picture. By this I mean where their head is faced and also where their eyes are facing. Try different positions to find what suits you best. Good Luck!!
