Location
I took this photo in my garden while testing a new macro lens. The flower is about 3mm tall.Time
This photo was taken around mid day, but I brought it into a windowed patio where the natural light became more diffused.Lighting
I prefer slightly underexposed shots with lots of diffused light. Led lamps are cheap and easy to get which can help a lot with bringing out details otherwise not exposed to the natural environment.Equipment
For this photo, I used a nikon 1 J4 with an adapted Tokina 100mm macro lens, which gives the equivalent magnification of close to 3:1Inspiration
The tiny size of this flower alone was inspiration to try capture it with a macro lens. A lush garden has endless possibilities in exploring a world not seen commonly.Editing
For post processing, I just tweaked a bit of saturation and levels in Lightroom.In my camera bag
I sold all my Nikon gear and moved onto Olympus. The EM5ii paired with a native 60mm macro (120mm full frame equivalent) is my go to setup. However, I have a lust for vintage lenses like the Meyer Optic 50mm which produce incredible bokeh.Feedback
What I have learned through my macro shooting is that the quality of the image, usually benefits from slightly underexposed settings which gives a lot of mood to the image. I find highlights that are blown out quite off putting and harder to adjust to bring some detail back. Diffused light is my preferred method of illuminating subjects and doesnt require any extra gear. If you can, take your subject into an area that is lit naturally like a covered patio and experiment with taking shots of as many angles as you can.
