"When words become unclear, I shall focus with photographs. When images become inadequate, I shall be content with silence." (Ansel Adams)

This image is part of my series "The Sound of Silence". For this series i have captured the atmosphere of various abandoned places. Many of those places have fallen in a deep slumber for decades.

I was going to give you a genius rating, but my mouse slipped before I clicked. I absolutely love this photograph. The lighting, textures and composition is all so perfect.

In a photo editor, put some people dancing and make them transparent, almost ghost like, into this photograph. That would look cool too, I think.

Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken in an abandoned sanatorium in Germany. This building is part of a large hospital complex which was erected at the end of the 19th century to treat tuberculosis.

Time

It was daytime and i have been very lucky to get bright sunlight shining through the windows. I just had to time my shootings in the building to be in this hall when the sun was in the right position.

Lighting

As i said, i was very lucky with the sunlight. So i just needed some smoke to make it more visible. No other effect or post processing manipulation was used to get those rays.

Equipment

I used my Nikon D7000 with a Tokina 12-24 lense. Tripod was crucial for this shot as it needed a longer exposure and multiple images for an HDR.

Inspiration

I really love the atmosphere in abandoned buildings. Once they have been crowded and vivid places, now there is almost only silence around. I love the traces of time and transience like paint peeling off the walls. The windows and the sunlight created the perfect scenery for me.

Editing

Besides creating an HDR with three exposures, i converted this image to black and white to emphasize light, details, clarity and quietness. I try to avoid time consuming post processings if i can so i put more work into the planning and execution of the shots. That said, there was not much post work needed... HDR creation, bw conversion and some fine tuning.

In my camera bag

I prefer to use less equipment. Instead i mostly use the available conditions to create a harmonious atmosphere and play with the light. So it mostly comes down to my camera, one to three lenses depending on the photos i have planned and a tripod if needed. No fancy stuff in my bag most of the times.

Feedback

First, be careful when roaming abandoned areas and don't risk your health to get your image. I won't go into detail with other issues of urban exploration now as this is more about the image. If you want to capture such lights you need to time your shooting according to the sun position. Be at your spot way earlier to prepare everything and be ready when the lights are like you want them. Smoke or dust makes the light rays much more visible so prepare the room a few minutes before taking the shot. Use a tripod. Your cameras bracket mode is pretty useful to get different exposures.
